Roundup: Mustangs finish 7th at Bobcat Classic


BASEHOR, Kan. - Jorge Rodriguez took first and Randy Boerner finished second to help Mountain Range finish seventh at the Bobcat Classic wrestling tournament on Saturday.

Topeka Seaman (Kan.) took first at the tournament with 177.5 points, while Blue Springs (Mo.) was second with 172. Mountain Range finished with 127 points.

Rodriguez pinned Alex Killpack of Glenwood, Iowa to win the heavyweight title. At 152 pounds, Boerner was pinned by Cain Salas (Blue Spring, Kan.) in the title match.

Also placing for the Mustangs, was Joel Geers (160) was fifth, Craig Egging (138) finished seventh and Timmy Romero (113) was seventh.

TIGERS FINISH THIRD IN LONGMONT: Vincent Casados (113), Julian Prieto (120) and Joseph Prieto (126) all won titles to help Holy Family finish third at the Gary Draum Classic in Longmont.

Daniel Jansen (220) and Willy Clements (285) each took third, while Ben Lavoie (182) was fourth for the Tigers.

Joseph Prieto pinned Monarch’s Landon Alm in the title match, while Casados had to rally to beat Frederick’s Jesse Ortiz 6-5 to take first. Julian Prieto won via default, because Golden’s Romelo Salas was injured and couldn’t wrestle in the finals.

Longmont took first, while Platte Valley was second.

KASA INVITED TO EAST-WEST SHRINE GAME: Former Legacy star, and current tight end for CU, Nick Kasa will play in the 88th East-West Shrine game, which will be played Saturday in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Kasa finished his senior year with 25 receptions, 391 yards and three touchdowns.

MUSTANGS INVITE: Shelly Drozda continued her dominance in the 200-yard freestyle, taking first at the Mustangs Invite with a time of 1 minute, 53.88 seconds.

Mountain Range finished seventh as a team, while Legacy was ninth and Horizon was 23rd.

The Mustangs also finished second in the 200-free and fourth in the 200-medley relay. Drozda was third in the 100-fly, while Mackenzie Saenz was sixth in the 50- and 100-free.

Legacy’s Mary Lombardi was third in the 500-free.

BOB DRYSDALE INVITE: Northglenn topped Mountain View, but lost to Lakewood, Poudre and Fort Collins at the Fort Collins wrestling meet.

Michael Garcia had a pair of pins in the tourney, while Maurisio Garcia had a tech fall and pin.

HORIZON COMPETES IN LEGEND DUALS: Horizon finished 10th at the Legend Duals on Saturday.

The Hawks topped Rock Canyon 42-30, but lost to Mead 56-19.

Anthony Cortez (113) and Ty Rife (138) each picked up wins in each dual.

LEGACY TOPS LAKEWOOD: The Lightning held on to edge the Tigers 40-32 in a dual meet on Jan. 10.

Ryan Deakin (106), Brian Mooney (138), Cole Randall (145) and Logan Lyons (285) all got pins in the win.
