Eight years on the Northglenn City Council was a good warm-up, according to Mayor-elect Carol Dodge.
“I think residents have seen that I walk the walk,” Dodge said Tuesday night. “I've been in the trenches for them for eight years. I'm not just talking rhetoric. I'm trying to do best things for the city and I'm not planning on moving on. I think that Northglenn citizens know that and they trust me.”
With 5,346 ballots counted as of 12:44 a.m. Wednesday, Dodge claimed a healthy 52.5 percent of the vote, compared to 27.1 percent for opponent Debbie Olander and 20.3 percent for Gene Wieneke.
“It was a little contentious towards the end,” Dodge said of the mayor's race. “I'm hoping to have everybody work together. The election is over, so we need to put aside any pettiness and move forward for the city. And I'm going to stand behind that.”
Voters also selected a new City Council. Races for those seats were much closer.
In Ward 1, candidate Meredith Leighty had an 8 percent lead over challengers Ashley Witkovich and Alexander “Skinny” Winkler. Leighty took 39.8 percent of the vote, Witkovich 30.9 percent, and Winkler 29.4 percent.
In Ward 2 City Council race, current Mayor Joyce Downing appeared to squeak by with five votes to spare, claiming of 50.2 percent of the total compared to opponent Danielle Henry's 49.8 percent.
In the race for Ward 3, Julie Duran Mullica garnered a solid 58.4 percent of the vote compared to Tim Postlewaite's 23.6 percent and Derrick Levy's 18 percent.
Similarly, in Ward 4, Jenny Wilford took 56.4 percent of the vote, compared to 23.9 percent for Helmut W. Koeckert and 19.7 percent for Phyllis Musk.
“I don't' know what everybody will be bringing to the council, but I hope they just bring what is going to be best for the city,” Dodge said.
The newly elected council will take the oath of office at the Dec. 11 City Council meeting, scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
