Did you know that in order to bring water to Thornton residents, your city purchased water 20 years ago north of Fort Collins? Now, they plan to build a 70-mile pipeline to bring that water to you.
That’s fine, as long as The City of Thornton is a nice neighbor and does so respectfully - but that’s not the case with their current proposal to the Larimer County Commissioners.
Their proposed route would place the 48-inch water pipe under a populated county road. The City of Thornton talked to only one small neighborhood group and avoided the rest of us, hundreds who use Douglas Road to enter our homes. It would permanently widen the easement, which means the destruction of trees, fences and taking property by eminent domain, if our County passes this unreasonable proposal.
A simple solution would make us all happy. As a member of the active neighborhood group, No Pipe Dream, we are asking our county commissioners to reject the City of Thornton’s application, and instead be good neighbors and environmental stewards and leave the water in the Poudre River through town to its takeout point near Windsor where the proposed pipeline runs south.
This would improve the health of the river and enhance natural areas around the river, adding beauty to our town and respecting neighbors of Douglas Road.
Please urge your city council members to be good neighbors to your friends to the north!
