Teen charged with murder in Kiaya Campbell's death

Posted

A 15-year-old boy was formally charged with murder Wednesday in the death of 10-year-old Kiaya Campbell.

While the boy has not been identified by officials because he is a minor, Adams County District Attorney Dave Young said he hopes to try the teenager as an adult.

Judge Priscilla Loew closed the courtroom at the Juvenile Division of Adams County Combined Courts to all but immediate family members. Afterward, Young said he charged the boy with intent to commit murder after deliberation and first-degree murder of a child under the age of 12 by a person in a position of trust. Both are class one felonies.

The suspect is due back in court at 1:30 p.m. June 30.

"That date will actually set a hearing date. We have not had a hearing yet," Young said. "This is a massive amount of police reports and discovery the defense counsel needs to get and review and so we hope to have a date set then."

Campbell disappeared June 7 while walking to a Thornton shopping area near 136th Avenue and Colorado Boulevard with the 15-year-old son of her father's girlfriend. Police were told the two had left her father's house near 124th and Forest Drive before 9 p.m. June 7 but were separated during a rainstorm at about the 12900 block of Colorado Boulevard.

Police began searching for the girl the next morning, stopping traffic in and out of the father's neighborhood, searching cars and concentrating on canals, ditches and lakes in the area.

Police issued an Amber Alert at 1:30 p.m. June 8. Volunteers began gathering to help out with a walking search but police called it off when the girl's body was found near 128th and Jasmine Court - roughly two miles east of where Campbell was last seen and about a mile from her father's Thornton home, according to police.

The coroner declared the death "other than accidental" and police arrested the suspect just before midnight June 10. The teen was taken to the Adams County Juvenile Detention Facility.
