Graduation 2017

York International graduate Alezandro Ruvalcaba

Ruvalcaba participated in the Mapleton district's Policy Debate team and the YouthRoots philanthropic organization. He will be interning at the Smithsonian Latino Center in Washington, D.C., and History Colorado for five weeks under the Young Ambassadors Program and will attend California's Pomona College on a full-ride scholarship.

What profession or career do you want to pursue? Why?

After graduating from Pomona, I hope to attend law school. After law school, I intend on working pro bono for immigration cases, then serving as a judge. My dream job is serving on the Supreme Court of the United States as a justice, ensuring the rights of those at the margins of society are not violated.

What do you hope to accomplish in life?

I hope to end the opportunity gap that disproportionately targets low-income students of color in relation to their affluent counterparts. I believe a quality education should not be reserved for those who happen to be wealthy and, like my teachers saw my freshman year, I see limitless potential in these youth who come from disadvantaged backgrounds.

If I could do anything, it would be to ...

Create programs in my community that effectively stress the importance of higher education. Because a large portion of Thornton is Latino families that speak only Spanish, the language barrier prevents parents from recognizing how to best help their children succeed in high school. I want to continue working with my community until all graduating seniors from the Mapleton Public Schools district not only go to college, but earn their diploma.
