Boys Basketball: Severance outlasts Riverdale Ridge down the stretch

Posted

The Severance Silver Knights defeated the Riverdale Ridge Ravens 54-50 at Riverdale Ridge High School on Feb. 26 behind sophomore Ty Adam's 24 points.

The two teams remained within striking distance for most of the game, with the Ravens carrying a slight 27-24 lead into halftime. While Severance made up some ground in the third quarter, Riverdale Ridge went into the final frame with a 41-39 lead.

From that point a hotly contested fourth quarter ensued. The teams were deadlocked at 48 with just over three minutes remaining until Severance's grinding offense took 50-48 a lead thanks to a gritty layup by junior Carson Fagan.

The Ravens were never quite able to recover. An untimely turnover on their next possession stalled Riverdale Ridge's offense, and a defensive foul on the ensuing inbounds play sent Adam to the line for one-and-one free throws. Adam - who shot 10-12 from the line and 7-13 from the field - sank both, giving Severance a four-point lead.

On their next possession, the Ravens found a good look for freshman point guard Marcus Hinh in the corner, but Hinh was unable to convert the three-point attempt. This forced Riverdale Ridge to foul - sending Adam to the line once again, where he made both foul shots to put the Silver Knights up 54-48.

Riverdale Ridge sophomore Ryan Leopold got an offensive rebound and made a put-back layup on the Raven's next possession, but by that point there was no time left for a rally. The loss drops the Ravens to 5-6 (4-4) on the season, while Severance's win improves the Silver Knights record to 9-2 (7-1).

With the exception of their season-opening loss to Frederick, the Raven's other five losses have all come in games decided by five or less points. With only one senior on the roster - forward Cayden Mazurek - Riverdale Ridge Head Coach Byron Gray said that his team will continue to mature and improve as they get more experience.

“We didn't value our possessions at the end of the game,” said Gray. “Maturing just a little bit down the stretch, not letting the pressure get to us as much as it does - we start to go too fast and when we go too fast, that's when things get away from us.”

Riverdale Ridge's offense is led by Hinh at the point and junior Anthony Chavez - an athletic wing who paced the Ravens with 23 points on 9-15 shooting. Their twitchy motion offense gave the Ravens plenty of open looks, but a few late misses down the stretch coupled with some inopportune turnovers ultimately proved to be the difference.

“We just have to be patient with everything, and it'll work out for us better,” said Gray. “The biggest key is for us to move the ball and get people spread out and make [our opponents] make mistakes. We have shooters - so they have to key off our shooters - it opens up the floor for us really well for us we just have to attack and be aggressive.”

The Ravens have two games remaining on their regular season slate, including one against Greeley West on Friday, March 5 at home. Severance caps off their regular season with an away game at Holy Family on Saturday, March 6.
