A record 21 recipients propelled the Rotary Club of Westminster’s scholarship program to more than $1 million awarded since it began in the 1990s.

This year’s grantees were presented scholarships at a May dinner meeting, which featured Gregg Moss, Metro North Chamber of Commerce CEO, as Keynote Speaker. Family members of recipients were also guests of the Rotary Club at the dinner meeting held at Ciancio’s at Hyland Hills Golf Course.

The 21 beneficiaries were selected from 75 applicants by interview teams of Rotary Club of Westminster members. The winners represented eight Metro North High Schools: Belleview Christian, Holy Family, Jefferson Academy, Legacy, Westminster, Mountain Range, Northglenn and Thornton.

Premier Scholarship of $4,000 was awarded to Josephine Page, a graduating senior at Legacy High School. It is funded by a $100,000 grant from the estate of the late Mike Schaffner, former Rotarian and Westminster business person.

Rotary members and retired School District 50 administrators Don Rhoda and Larry Malsam chaired the program for more than a decade. Bill Bowman headed the Scholarship committee for seven years, and Deb Haviland chaired and organized the 2018-19 achievement.

Retired CPA Ron Schaefer has been the connection with colleges and universities for more than two decades, submitting tuition grants and monitoring minimum grade standards of recipients.

The Rotary Club of Westminster meets each Thursday at Ciancio’s, 96th and Sheridan. .
