Westminster Public Schools have been cleared by the Colorado State Board of Education to operate a unique style of education out of the Flynn Elementary at 88th Avenue and Lowell Boulevard.
Commissioners voted unanimously to let the district shape the school’s curriculum in partnership with educator and author Dr. Robert Marzano. Called John E. Flynn, a Marzano Academy, it will become the second Marzano-themed school in the country.
Marzano has authored more than 50 books on teaching, including the influential New Art and Science of Teaching, used by teachers around the world.
Marzano helped the Westminster district create its Competency Based System, designed to emphasizes student mastery of a learning topic.
Under the competency model, students move to the next learning level when they have demonstrated proficiency, meaning some students move ahead quickly, while others take the necessary time to acquire competency and fill in gaps in their learning.
The Westminster district is the largest school district in the nation to adopt a Competency Based learning model for all students.
Competency-based learning is also a critical component of what Marzano calls High Reliability schools, which focus on effective teaching in every classroom and a safe and collaborative culture.
Marzano began working with Westminster teachers in the fall of 2017, in anticipation of the change, and teachers from across the district will also have access to Dr. Marzano’s expertise and participate in professional development opportunities.
The Marzano Academy is a key component of the District Management Pathway plan approved by the State Board of Education. Information about the school can be found at http://marzano.westminsterpublicschools.org.
