Developer plans to break ground for Thornton project this year

A 13-acre, eight-lot development in east Thornton received its first approval from the city council at a Jan. 12 meeting.

The council unanimously approved the conceptual plan for a commercial project in the larger Creekside Village development at the intersection of 128th Avenue and Quebec Street. A Starbucks and unnamed credit union have already signed on and the developer hopes to secure more lease agreements when construction begins this year.

The retail space will occupy the northeast corner of Creekside Village, the rest of which is a residential subdivision to undergo construction this year and next. The retail space will be directly across the street from Walmart Supercenter. The new development will be close to the Riverdale Dunes Golf Course and Riverdale Ridge High School.

“I think this is going to be a great project, not just for the surrounding neighborhoods, but also for people who are using the bike paths and the walking paths that stretch east and west through the property,” said Jason Wedlick, a project manager for applicant Woodbury Corporation, at the Jan. 12 meeting.

Wedlick said he expects construction to start this May or June.

Through public comments submitted beforehand and city councilor comments, people were mainly concerned about traffic on 128th Ave. and Quebec St. Wedlick said Woodbury will widen both streets and install a traffic signal at the intersection of the two.

Council members also said they want Woodbury to attract tenants who are restaurants that can offer outdoor dining. “That would be great to attract some more of those opportunities. Especially to that area, of course,” said Councilwoman Angie Bedolla. Councilman Sam Nizam, who represents the ward the development is in, agreed. He said people are tired of drive-through restaurants.

Overall, the council was pleased with the presentation and offered little push back for the development.

Councilor Nizam said to Wedlick, “Jason, I want to say that I appreciate what you guys did, bringing retail to Ward 3, it’s badly needed.”
