Crash causes small grass fire, prompts closure of highway

An accident along US 36 caused the closure of the highway and ignited a small grass fire on June 25.

The accident happened around 12:40 p.m. between Sheridan Boulevard and Church Ranch Boulevard along US 36. A car struck a power pole, causing live lines to drop across the highway, which sparked the fire. Power was interrupted in the surrounding area, said Diana Allen, with the Westminster Fire Department.

Both Westminster fire and police responded to the incident. The fire was put out by 1 p.m. but the road remained closed until Xcel crews could move the power lines, Allen said. Eastbound US 36 lanes were opened by 1:40 p.m., followed by one westbound lane at 2:10 p.m. The driver of the vehicle was transported from the scene by helicopter to a local hospital for medical treatment.

Westminster police spokeswoman Cheri Spottke said investigators don’t know what caused the crash, but a 911 caller reported an erratic driver on 36 when the wreck happened.
