Nearly nine years after Heather DeWild’s decomposing body was found in Clear Creek Canyon, her estranged husband, Daniel DeWild, and his twin brother, David, will face trial for her murder.

The two brothers pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder charges, and Jefferson County District Court Judge Christopher Munch set their trial date for Oct. 2.

According to court documents, the 30-year-old Edgewater resident disappeared on July 24, 2003, shortly after dropping off her children at Daniel DeWild’s home. Daniel DeWild and Heather DeWild were in the final stages of their divorce at the time, and court documents allege that Daniel DeWild used a “ruse” to bring Heather DeWild to his home.

Heather DeWild’s body was found nearly three months later on Sept. 4, 2003, in a shallow grave near mile marker 262.5 on U.S. Highway 6.

Mary Rosen DeWild and David DeWild were dating and living together at Daniel DeWild’s home at the time of Heather DeWild’s disappearance. Mary DeWild and David DeWild later married on Aug. 1, 2003, under circumstances that have been questioned in court.

Jefferson County District Court Judge Verna Carpenter on May 18 determined there was sufficient probable cause to charge her as an accessory to murder in connection with Heather DeWild’s death, and set her bail at $300,000. Mary DeWild’s next scheduled court appearance has been set for Monday, June 11.
