Horse expo debuts at Adams County Fair

With summer season comes fair season, and this year’s Adams County Fair will not miss a beat. The five-day event beginning on Aug. 1 will be filled with fun, food and hometown entertainment.

This year a new event is on the agenda for first evening of the fair, a 4-H horse expo in the United Power Grandstand Arena. The event will feature the talents of 4-H members performing with their horses in a variety of manners. Erin Van Peer, 4-H program associate, said this is the first time 4-H members will have the opportunity to show off for their families and friends during fair week.

“The 4-H kids show their horses on the Monday and Tuesday before the fair begins,” she said. “So in the past they have already finished up before the fair starts. By adding this event, the kids will feel more involved in the fair and be able to show off all the hard work they’ve done with their horses.”

The expo will feature showmanship, English riding and jumping, Western pleasure and reigning, horses-driving carts, speed events and musical freestyle. Keith Fenley, 4-H volunteer, said the musical freestyle event will be a big hit.

“Musical freestyle is a huge crowd pleaser because it’s just so much fun to watch the things the kids can do with their horses to music,” he said. “And the jumping will also be a crowd-pleaser. And the best part is we aren’t limiting this event to just advanced riders, it’s all levels and all ages of kids.”

Fenley said the expo will also be a good opportunity to educate the audience about 4-H. After the expo, 4-H members will be on hand to answer questions about the organization.

“4-H is really a phenomenal program. My daughter has been involved in 4-H for years, and it’s done some amazing things for her,” he said. “Through this expo, we want to give people an idea of what 4-H is about and how it can be a benefit to a child’s life.”

The horse expo is a free event beginning at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 1 in the United Power Grandstand Arena. The Adams County Fair runs Aug. 1-5 and includes livestock shows, performing-arts shows, tractor events, the carnival and, of course, exhibits of all the 4-H projects. The fairgrounds is at 9755 Henderson Road in Brighton.
