After moving to Colorado from Iowa, Donnie Mengwasser knew he wanted to open a fitness gym in the northwest suburbs.
He researched various franchises until finally landing on 9Round, a specialized fitness center focused on boxing and kickboxing. Mengwasser also found the ideal location in a King Soopers center in Westminster at 104th Avenue and Federal Boulevard.
“This area is densely populated which was appealing,” he said. “And I just like Westminster and the traffic that comes with being in a King Soopers center.”
9Round workouts are 30 minutes long and include a full body circuit format with nine, three-minute stations of activities. In one session, Mengwasser said a person will do 25 different exercises that include cardio, weight training, abdominal exercises and various kicks and punches. Each round is separated by a real boxing bell ring, signaling the move to the next exercise.
“The number one thing that makes 9round unique among all fitness classes, is the fact that we have no class times,” Mengwasser said. “Everything is trainer-led, so it’s not a gym where you do your own thing.”
A 9Round membership is unlimited and family friendly. Donnie has a member as young as nine and as old as 67. He said because the workouts are heavily guided, the focus remains on each individual’s progress.
Jessica Taylor joined 9Round three weeks ago. She’s already felt and seen results, losing five pounds in the first two weeks.
“It feels like I have a personal trainer. It’s amazing,” she said. “I feel physically and emotionally so much better. I feel like a totally different person. My confidence has definitely grown.”
Mengwasser is hosting a grand opening celebration 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 4 at 9Round, 10343 Federal Blvd. Unit L in Westminster. The event will feature giveaways, fitness competitions and refreshments. For more information on 9Round, visit www.9round.com.
