Legacy and Broomfield clash for girls' soccer league title

The Class 5A No. 9 ranked Legacy girls' soccer team came up short in its quest for the Front Range League South title Thursday.

Top-ranked and undefeated Broomfield Eagles scored two goals in the first half to beat league rival Lightning 2-0 and win the FRL South title.

The two squads had to navigate through a spring storm that brought freezing rain and 20 mph wind that made the elements less than ideal.

“I’m proud of our team,” Legacy coach Heather Solar said. “They battled and you can’t ask for more than that.”

Broomfield (12-0 overall, 7-0 in Class 5A Front Range South) got on the board first when senior Reagan Kotchau found the back of the net five minutes into the contest. Fellow senior Nicky Choren added the second goal on a corner kick halfway through the first half to give the Eagles a commanding lead.

It was the eighth shutout for Broomfield this season.

Legacy (10-2-1, 6-1 FRL) did have a couple of chances to get on board in the second half. Senior Kendall Rippley and sophomore Makayla Martinez each had a shot that was stopped by Broomfield’s goalie Stella Roane.

It was only the second loss of the season for the Lightning, their other loss was to ThunderRidge (4-1) earlier this season.

“We had a couple of opportunities that we didn’t capitalize on in the second half,” Solar said. “But we played pretty good defense, especially in the second half.”

Legacy wore orange jerseys in honor of Chris Reagan, a former Lightning boys soccer standout who died in 2008.

The Lightning got back in the win column Saturday, beating Fruita-Monument 4-1. Rippley scored a pair of goals for Legacy, to increase her team-best goals to 22. Martinez and senior Katey Beaver each added a goal. Rippley, Kylie Hoffman, Natalie Mezarina and Sophia Varga all had assists in the contest.

Next up for Legacy will be two games in the Front Range League North/South crossover tournament. The Lightning host No. 2 Fossil Ridge Tuesday and travel to Fort Collins to play Rocky Mountain on Thursday.
