Suspect killed after police chase through Denver, Thornton

Thornton and Denver police killed a man Jan. 2 who they say pointed a gun at the officers in the 300 block of East 88th Avenue.

Wesley Maldonado, 35, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident began when Thornton police were called to the Renaissance 88 Apartments at approximately 11:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 2, on a possible domestic violence incident where it was reported a gun had been fired.

As officers were arriving at the scene, the suspect was observed leaving the area in a vehicle. The suspect eluded officers after they tried to stop him and led them on a 30-minute chase through Denver and back to the apartment complex of the original incident in Thornton.

As the suspect vehicle was driving through the apartment complex, the driver appeared to intentionally collide with two police vehicles, according to a statement released by Thornton police.

“Officers indicated that the suspect appeared to point a firearm at the officers. At this point, four officers from the Thornton and Denver Police Departments fired their weapons at the suspect,” the statement said.

Police say a firearm was found in possession of the suspect and evidence indicates it was fired at some point during the incident.

The Adams County Critical Incident Team is investigating the incident. Anyone with information is asked to call Metro Area Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867.
