Old sheriff’s office to be razed

The former Adams County Sheriff’s Office headquarters in Brighton will be razed after mitigation for lead paint and asbestos is completed.

The Board of County Commissioners awarded a $324,373 contract to Englewood-based construction contractor Hudspeth and Associates, Inc., during its Aug. 15 meeting, charging the company with removing all hazardous materials and demolishing the building by the end of the year.

Mike Goins, Adams County facility and operations department director, said no specific start date has been set for the abatement work as he is waiting on building permit authorizations from the city of Brighton.

He said the contractors will meet with county officials Sept. 10, and the date should be determined before that meeting.

Goins said the building “was past its useful life” by the time the Sheriff’s Office moved in 2007 into its new facility less than half a mile away at 332 North 19th Ave.

The old headquarters, 1901 East Bridge St., was built in 1961, according to Adams County assessment records.

Goins said the move was made because the building’s mechanical and electric systems and jail areas were dated and could no longer meet the county’s growing needs.

Adams County Administrator Jim Robinson said the county has not decided what it will happen to the property once the building is demolished.

While he did not rule out the possibility of selling the entire 14-acre site, including the former site of the Adams County Judicial Center, Robinson said a formal decision would be rendered after the demolition.

The relocation of the Adams County Sheriff’s Office was one of the moves made by the county to upgrade and improve its building infrastructure in the last decade.

The Adams County Justice Center moved from its site, adjacent to the former Sheriff’s Office, in 1998 to its current location at 1100 Justice Center Drive.

Kevin Denke, a Brighton School District 27J public information officer, said Brighton Charter High School moved into the former Adams County Justice Center building n 1998 and left at the end of the 2006-2007 school year.

The building was demolished in the summer of 2009.

About 1.5 miles away, the old Adams County Administration Building at 450 South Fourth Ave. was shuttered last year after the new $103 million county administration building at 4430 South Adams County Parkway opened its doors to county employees.

The Fourth Avenue building now houses city of Brighton offices.
