DENVER --  Skyview's Ezra Herrera (120 pounds) and Isaac Ibarra (138 pounds) placed third in their respective weight classes at the state 3A wrestling tournament at Ball Arena.

Herrera (38-7) split his first two matches, then had to win four in a row to claim third place. The closest win was a 2-0 decision over Brandon Hansen of Valley in the third round of consolations. He beat Jaden Hixson 9-3 in the third-place match.

Ibarra (44-5) followed the same script. He split his first two matches, then won four straight. His closest match in that stretch was the third-place match, where he beat Severance's Killan Schultz 2-1. Two of his four matches were pinfall victories.

Brandon Gutierrez (8-4) was sixth at 220 pounds.  Gutierrez split his first two matches,  a win over Hector Hernandez of Jefferson in the first round and a quarterfinal loss to Jake Hustoles of James Irwin in the quarterfinals. He won the next two in the consolation round, including an overtime win against Jayce Prante of Englewood.

Abram Moore of Holy Family eked out a 6-5 decision over Gutierrez in the consolation semifinals. Dominich Ontiveros of brush pinned Gutierrez in 1:18 of the fifth-place match.

10 p.m. Feb. 18

DENVER -- Skyview's Brandon Gutierrez stayed alive in the 220-pound consolation round by beating Coal Ridge's Angelo Perea 4-3 this evening. Gutierrez faces Jayce Prante of Englewood in the next round.

Lamar's Orlando Whatley pinned Skyview's Ezra Herrera in 1:34  of their consolation-round match at 120 pounds tonight. The loss ended Herrera's season. He had a record of 35-7.

At 138 pounds, Isaac Ibaraa's season is done. He lost in the second round of consolations to Valley's Garrett McGirt by pinfall. Ibarra finished with a record of 41-7 this year.

Matches resume tomorrow at 10 a.m.

10:10 a.m. Feb. 18

DENVER -- Conifer's Anthony Isek took a major (10-2) decision from Skyview's Ezra Herrera in the 120-pound quarterfinals of the state 3a wrestling tournament at Ball Arena this morning.

Herrera is alive in the consolation bracket. His first match in that part of the draw will be later tonight.

Skyview's Brandon Gutierrez lost by pinfall to James Irwin's Jake Hustoles in the 220-pound quarterfinals this morning. Gutierrez' first consolation round match is later this evening.

3:55 p.m. Feb. 17

DENVER -- Three Skyview wrestlers advanced to the quarterfinals of the state 3A wrestling tournament Feb. 17 at Ball Arena.

Ezra Herrera is into the quarterfinals at 120 pounds. He shut out Fort Morgan's Miguel Lopez 7-0 in the opening round. Herrera takes on Anthony Isek of Peyton in the quarterfinals. Isaac Ibarra made it to the quarterfinals by pinning Rifle's Parker Miller in 1:11 of their first-round, 138-pound match. Ibarra races Woodland Park's Brady Hankin.

At 220 pounds, the Wolverines' Brandon Gutierrez beat Jefferson's Hector Hernandez in the first round. Gutierrez faces Jake Hustoles of James Irwin in the next round.

The quarterfinal round begins at 8 a.m. Friday, Feb. 18. The second round of consolations begin at 7:15 p.m.
