The shootings in Aurora have people all over the country wondering if movie theaters are going to ramp up security.
The Regal Entertainment Group, which owns theaters from Colorado Mills in Lakewood down to the Meadows Stadium in Littleton, released a statement on July 20 saying that “the security and safety of our guests and staff is always our No. 1 priority. As is our custom, we will continue to monitor the situation and adjust our security needs as necessary.”
AMC Theatres also released a statement that same afternoon, saying, “We’re reinforcing our security procedures with our theatre teams, which we cannot discuss in detail for obvious, safety reasons.” The statement went on to say that “local law enforcement agencies, our landlords and their and our local security teams are stepping up nationwide to ensure we provide the safest environment possible for our guests.”
At the Westminster Promenade theater on Friday night, where there was a midnight showing of “The Dark Knight Rises,” the same film that was showing at the theater where the shootings occurred, a Westminster police car was parked prominently in front of the theater, and an officer was stationed in the lobby.
Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department public information officer Mark Techmeyer said the current plan is to enhance patrols and presence in and around places like malls and movie theaters, where large groups of people will be gathering.
“We want a higher presence in the area to be more visible and let people know we are there,” he said.
It is still unclear what changes this event will have in the long term for moviegoers. AMC discouraged people from wearing face-concealing masks as part of costumes, and at the Promenade, people’s bags were searched before entering the theater, but theater officials have not yet been decided how long these measures will be in place.
