PUBELO -- Two Thornton wrestlers placed at the state 5A wrestling tournament after losing in the quarterfinal round.

The one-day tournament was at the Southwest Motors Events Center March 18.

At 138 pounds, Isaac Ibarra fought through the consolation round and finished third. He won the third-place match over Douglas County's Justin Kelchen by injury default.

Ibarra picked up a forfeit win over Dante Hutchings of Pomona in the first round of consolation matches. He beat Horizon's Travis Guzman 3-0 in the consolation semifinals.

In the quarterfinals, Aidan Lenz beat Ibarra 10-4.

At 152 pounds, Zack Zuniga of the Trojans fought through the consolation bracket and placed fourth. He gave Regis Jesuit's Antonio Segura all he could handle before Segura won 6-5 in the quarterfinals at 152 pounds. Segura was the top seed in the weight class.

Zuniga then won two straight consolation bracket matches -- a 5-2 decision over Fort Collins' Maximus Brobson and a 10-4 decision over Brighton's DJ Rock. The third-place match went to Ponderosa's Randy Myers by pinfall.

DeShon Gallegos, the Trojans' 160-pounder, did not place. He lost in the quarterfinals to Cody Ginther of Fossil Ridge by a technical fall score of 15-0. Overland's Ryan Hensley pinned Gallegos in 3:44 of the first round of consolations.

Brandon Gutierrez, THS' 195-pound state qualifier, did not place. Cherry Creek's Matthew Sorderborg pinned Gutierrez in 3:23 of their quarterfinal match at 195 pounds. Pomona's Justin Cullen earned a major, 18-6 decision over Gutierrez in the first round of the consolation draw.

Ponderosa's Jacob Bostelman beat Thornton's Nadim Kargar 6-1 in the opening round at 126 pounds. Kegan Swain of Chaparral eliminated Kargar in the first round of consolations. Swain rallied in the last minute to earn a pinfall win with just 12 seconds left in the match.
