Windsor handcuffs Holy Family to claim conference victory

Feb. 13 at home against Windsor, the Tigers never captured a lead against a deep, talented Wizards group that moved on to claim a 58-35 win — their 11th in 15 conference contests.

Scoring their first basket with 4:06 left in the first quarter on junior Blake Hammond’s free-throw, HF tallied just seven points in the frame as Windsor took their 8-point advantage to the second.

Windsor, however, didn’t take their foot off the gas pedal in new quarter tallying 22 points — much of which coming off live-ball turnovers by the Tigers on the other end.

“Those were tough on us,” Holy Family coach Peter Villecco said after the game on the turnovers. “Our margin of error against a good team like Windsor is small. Playing 5-on-5 is our only chance. The turnovers that led to easy baskets are hard for us to overcome.”

Nine players found the score sheet for the visitors in the opening half while senior Garrett Green’s 12 points kept Holy Family 19 down going to the break. Unfortunately for the Tigers, a cleaner-played third quarter wasn’t enough to get back into things as the Windsor flexed their depth for 32 minutes.

“We just didn’t have a lot of juice in the first half for whatever reason. We challenged our kids at halftime to compete regardless of the scoreboard,” Villecco said. “They fought a lot harder in the 3rd quarter, but our hole was just too big to dig out of.”

Moving to 9-12 (6-8 in conference) after the defeat, the youthful HF squad looks to end the regular season on a strong note, gaining momentum into postseason play.

“We have two games left to get better. It is a great opportunity for us to play a good Skyline team on the road next Tuesday and the No. 1 team in 4A in Mead at home next Friday. We want to see growth in all areas from all of our guys. We haven’t given up on this season, and we will keep reaching to get better heading into the tournament.”

Green led the group with 17 points as Hammond followed with eight.
